Biografia:
John Vincent è l’ultimo dei tre figli di Arnould Herbert Hurt, matematico e vicario della chiesa di St. Stephen a Woodville (South Derbyshire) e Phyllis Massey, ingegnere e attrice.
Dall’età di otto anni frequenta la scuola privata di St. Micheals a Sevenoaks, per superrare la solitudine a nove anni inizia a recitare e il suo primo ruolo è quello di una bambina nella recita scolastica di “L’Oiseau Blu”. A dodici si trasferisce con la famiglia a Grimsby, dove i genitori lo iscrivono a studiare arte alla Grimsby Art School. Nel 1959 vince una borsa di studio per il Central St. Martins Collage di Helborn, dove si diploma come insegnante d’arte. Inizialmente si dedica alla pittura, poi però la passione per il teatro lo spinge ad entrare alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, dove si specializza in opere shakeaspiriane. Il suo debutto sul palcoscenico avviene nel 1962 con “Infanticide in the house of Fred Ginger” e nello stesso anno interpreta il primo ruolo cinematografico in “The wild and the wiling”. Il suo primo ruolo davvero importante però arriva nel 1966, con la parte di Richard Rich in “Un uomo per tutte le stagioni”.
A ruoli in pellicole cinematografiche alterna film televisivi.
Uno dei ruoli più difficili della sua lunga carriera, è stato sicuramente quello del mostro in “The Elephant Man” di David Lynch, per il quale dovette sottoporsi quotidianamente a sette ore di trucco.
Nella sua carriera ha ricevuto molti premi, tra cui un Golden Globe e ben due nomination agli Oscar (per “The Elephant Man” e “Midnight Express”).
