Biografia: Il padre dell'attore era il preside del college di Cheltenham. Studia a Oxford e qui conosce Richard Burton con il quale diventa amico. Durante l'interpretazione de ”Enrico V”, l'attore si interessa alle strategie militari e realizza un documentario sulla battaglia di Agincourt. Nel 1952 si sposa con Elizabeth Fox dalla quale si è separato nel 1956, nel 1961 sposa Sally Pearson, dalla quale ha avuto tre figli e ha divorziato nel 1961.
